Shadow Working Party Report

The Report of Forward in Faith’s Shadow Working Party on Women and the Episcopate – under the title Consecrated Women? – edited by Fr Jonathan Baker, Principal of Pusey House, Oxford, will be published under the joint imprint of Canterbury Press and Forward in Faith on 8th October, price £9.99. It is now two and a half years since the then Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, encouraged us to set up a Working Party to examine the question of women bishops from the point of view of those unable in conscience to accept the ordination of women to the priesthood and episcopate. As well as a thoroughgoing examination of the theological issues involved, it will include contributions from Fr Aidan Nichols OP, Fr Geoffrey Kirk, Bishop John Broadhurst, Bishop Andrew Burnham, Fr John Hunwicke, Fr David Houlding SSC and Archdeacon Martin Williams. It will also address the legal consequences for the Church if women are ordained as bishops and offer an equitable solution to the problems which will inevitably arise. It will prove a key text in the debate, essential reading for those for, those against and, more importantly, the many who do not fully realise the issues involved. You can pre-order this book either from Canterbury Press online at: http://www.scm-canterburypress.co.uk/bookdetails.asp?ISBN=1853115096 or from any good bookshop, by quoting ISBN 1 85311509 6.

SSC sesquicentennial

The Society of the Holy Cross (SSC) was founded by Charles Lowder on 28th February, 1855. As he reflected on the problems facing both the Church and society, he discerned a need for the clergy to commit themselves to a rule of life, in order to serve the Church better and to further the cause of the Kingdom. Today, the Roll of the Society stands at over 1,000 priests worldwide, of whom about 700 work in these islands.

The Master of SSC, Fr David Houlding, is calling all the brethren of the Society throughout the world together in Synod, for a Theological Conference, culminating in a great public celebration of the Society’s 150th Anniversary in the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday, 9th April, 2005 – a celebration to which we are all invited! More details will follow so, for now, book that date in your diaries and make sure that you are in the Albert Hall for the biggest corporate celebration for our integrity since Christ our Future.

Priests who are not members of SSC, but who are in sympathy with the aims and objectives of Forward in Faith, are cordially invited by the Society to concelebrate in the Royal Albert Hall. They should send a cheque for £10, made payable to SSC, to the Director at Forward in Faith, 2A The Cloisters, Gordon Square, London WC1H 0AG.
